They say that sailing in very light airs is character forming and Sundays Goodyear Auto and Appleton’s Rum race 7 was certainly that with 0 to 5 knots and forty degree wind shifts to contend with. At the start line outside the Kerikeri Cruising Club it proved difficult for some of the twenty boats to even cross the line. Large areas of no wind created a minefield for the yachts to negotiate and it was common for boats to go from the front of the fleet to the back in the space of 100 meters.

The sun was out but the 15 knot SW breeze made it cool for the start of the Willis Sails Winter race 7 at the Kerikeri Cruising club on Sunday the 18th.

Despite the cold 15 knot SE breeze and overcast conditions twenty yachts turned out for the start of the Goodyear Auto and Appleton’s Rum race 6 at the Kerikeri Cruising Club.

A glorious winter’s day with a 15 knot breeze greeted the 26 starters at the Goodyear Auto and Appleton’s Rum race five in the series organized by the Kerikeri Cruising Club on the 27th of June. Towards the end the wind did die away to 7 or 8 knots which allowed some of the leaders to pull away but the judges at the finish had an unenviable task as up to eight boats would cross the line in a tight bunch.

Saturday’s gale left a large swell for the 17 starters of the Willis Sails Winter race 5 to contend with at Kerikeri and only some very light patchy breezes to steady them as they swooped over the large lifts.

Sunday the 13th June saw 21 starters face the starter in the Goodyear Auto and Appleton Rum race 4. A cold blustery SW wind of 25knots gusting 35 had most boats putting in reefs in their mainsail and pulling on the wet weather gear.

Gale Warning for Brett….35 knots gusting 45….seas rough to very rough. That was the forecast for Sunday 6th June for the Willis Sails Winter race four at the Kerikeri Cruising Club. That forecast was sufficient for most of the B division boats to flag it away and not start. As there were not enough yachts to make up a division the B division was scrubbed and only four brave souls started the A division.

A mirror calm greeted the 24 starters in the Goodyear Auto and Appleton rum race series on Sunday the 30th May at Kerikeri Cruising Club. After a delayed start a very light breeze kicked in from the SW with enough promise to persuade the Officer of the day to set a short course and start the race.

Sixteen boats came out on the 23rd may for the third race in the Willis Sails Winter race series with a forecast of rain and 15 to 20 knots of NE breeze. The breeze kicked in but the rain held off making for a pleasant days sail.

A large fleet of 26 yachts turned out for the start of the Appleton Rum and Goodyear Tyres Rum race 2 on May 16th. A steady 12 to 14 knot NW wind and a clear sunny sky made for very pleasant sailing conditions.
