A large fleet of 26 yachts turned out for the start of the Appleton Rum and Goodyear Tyres Rum race 2 on May 16th. A steady 12 to 14 knot NW wind and a clear sunny sky made for very pleasant sailing conditions.
Mark Beauchamp’s new canting keel boat Tongue Twister led the A division away at the start on a beat to Western Buoy closely chased by Pete Woods in Physical Favours. The Ross 30 of Pete Woods eventually got through to the lead after a torrid battle to take line honours. Third place over the line was the big Spencer Sagita of Simon Willis just over 3 minutes behind the line honours winner.
Sagita took out the handicap prize by 4 seconds from Vim and another 9 seconds back to Petty Cash with Physical Favours 4th. That’s close handicapping!
In the B division Scout scooted away at the start to lead Aalitta around the Western Buoy with Coyote Blue catching up after a poor start. However, it did not take long for Coyote Blue to establish her speed and show the fleet the way home followed by Bedouin just over a minute behind with Scout another 2 minutes further back.
The bottle of rum for winning the handicap section of B division went to Bedouin from Coyote Blue with the H28 La Pajara who was 10th over the line taking 3rd.
Windsong came out at the start sporting a very large carbon fibre main but some teething problems saw them withdraw along with Kotahi.

I think Sagitta’s hadicap is too low. I realise that you had to start somewhere and the sistership Niceone would have been some sort of guide. But we are a much faster boat and should not nave a hadicap in the 700’s.
I would gues some where near Physical Favours.
Please also note that there are two t’s in Sagitta.
