Goodyear Autos and Appletons Rum Race 5

A glorious winter’s day with a 15 knot breeze greeted the 26 starters at the Goodyear Auto and Appleton’s Rum race five in the series organized by the Kerikeri Cruising Club on the 27th of June.  Towards the end the wind did die away to 7 or 8 knots which allowed some of the leaders to pull away but the judges at the finish had an unenviable task as up to eight boats would cross the line in a tight bunch.

Black Pearl

In the B division That Girl made her usual good start but this time was chased closely by Coyote Blue and Windsong throughout the entire course. As the race progressed Bedouin joined that group with Jagged Edge hard on her heels. A shift in the wind direction in the latter stages allowed That Girl to stretch away but not enough to take handicap honours which fell to Bedouin from Windsong and Coyote Blue.

Black Pearl joined the A division for the first time and this big twin ruddered Young 13 meter yacht promised to give all the fleet a fright and so it proved with her taking line honours from Razzel and Physical Favours.

However, the Warwick designed Sunday Sun won the handicap section from the Young 88 Wise Guy and the Farr 1020 Petty Cash.

On such a lovely day this large fleet makes a great sight coming up the Kerikeri River in a tight bunch and was appreciated by the spectators at the club house.

    Yay Ill be the first to comment, some one has to be.

    I love the new web site and like most of the competitors we eagerly await Brians editorial comments and summing up and the results
    .
    We had a beautifull afternoons sail, couldn’t quite get to That Girl over the line due to Pete and Janet coming out of a tack better on the way back up to the western mark. This Sunday we’ll ‘ave ‘em.

    Most websites that have comments have admins to make sure that the comments aren’t out of order, I don’t think we would have that problem here unless it’s because of Dave’s spelling.
    However without some intrigue and discussion things can get stale, so i’ll go first;

    If a boat with right of way collides with a give way vessel they will both most likey be disqualified, two boats would have been booted this Sunday if it had gone to a protest commitee.

    And can we get some class identification for the starts, I am very much in the starters debt and appreciate their time and efforts, if they want me to make some sort of board class flags or A,B or C boards I will.

    Fair comment on the collision, Tim!
    That i/d’s a good suggestion. I’m all for you wearing a Class identification. May I suggest a 2 meter square board mounted athwartships just for’ard of your mast – I’ll be able to spot that alright. Better still – how about a seperate class for surfing boats?
